Google Play Store to make widgets more discoverable

Google Play Store will be adding a new visual badge that indicates it has widgets so users are aware of the apps with those specific functions. 

The search giant admitted that “one of the challenges with investing in widget development has been discoverability and user understanding,” so they will be rolling out new features to promote them better on Android phones, tablets and other foldable devices aside from the Play Store. 

Additionally, app listings on the Play Store will also have a separate search filter so users can directly look for apps that offer widgets. This will mean that users don’t have to read the app listing or scroll through screenshots to find out.

Google will also be rolling out an Editorial Page that highlights widgets that are designed well and showcases apps that come along with one. The dedicated page will also teach users how important widgets can be - they can push user engagement with an app and shares constant updates on the home screen to them informed.
