WhatsApp rolling out document scanning feature

Meta’s messaging service WhatsApp is rolling out a dedicated feature for users to scan documents that they wish to send to others.

Users can access the new document scanning feature when they choose to upload or select the documents they wish to send to others on WhatsApp.

In the past, users had to either photograph the document they wanted to send, scan it through their phone’s camera (if such a feature was supported), or rely on a third-party app in order to create a scanned document file.

WhatsApp also allowed users to upload documents, or choose photos/videos of documents. Now, there is a new ‘Scan document’ option to select.

According to the WaBetaInfo outlet, the new update corresponds with the WhatsApp for iOS 24.25.89 version.

Several iOS users in India reported they were able to access the document scanning feature on WhatsApp. However, the new feature does not appear to have been rolled out to all Android users as well as WhatsApp Business users yet.

Scanning a document results in a brighter and cleaner image where text and signatures are more legible, while photos of documents can be over or under-exposed in places, along with having blurry edges.
