Apple disables AI summaries for news temporarily

Apple has temporarily paused its AI news summary feature after multiple complaints of inaccurate headlines. The company has disabled the feature in the iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3 betas.

In December, BBC complained about false news headlines saying Luigi Mangione, who is charged with the death of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, had shot himself.

In another instance, in November, it sent a notification from NYT saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested which is not true.

More recently, a WSJ journalist said news notifications from the outlet on Pete Hegseth and Pam Bondi were incorrectly summarised.

Apple plans to improve the feature and then release it again in the future. The style for these notifications has also been updated to set it apart from other notifications by making the text italicised. Users will also be able to turn off notification summaries on or off from their lock screen. Earlier, users could only turn the feature off through Settings.
